At least 10 members of Maute reinforcement were reportedly able to sneak into the battle zone in Marawi to join the remaining terrorists still holed up in the beleaguered Islamic city.

ABS-CBN cited its sources that the reinforcement took advantage of the heavy rains during the night to slip into Marawi City via Lanao Lake from Marantao town.

A military spokesperson admitted that there is a big possibility that enemies can slip past soldiers guarding the lake; considering its large area.

“It is really possible to happen, kaya nga po naglagay tayo ng forces diyan sa area na iyan [that’s why we deploy forces in the area]. Mayroon tayong [we have] Joint Task Group Lawa, composed of the PNP (Philippine National Police) and Special Forces, na nagco-conduct ng [that conducts]patrols, maritime patrols 24/7,” Capt. Jo-Ann Petinglay, spokesperson of Joint Task Force Marawi, said, noting that Lanao Lake’s total area is 340 square kilometers.

The enemy reinforcement, if true, could mean prolonged war in Marawi, but Petinglay said ground forces have prepared for such situation.
