- Impeachment raps filed against Vice President
- Proponents said they have submitted papers to solon for endorsement
- VP accused of betraying public trust, misdeclaring her SALN, and misusing HUDCC funds
MANILA, Philippines – A group seeking the ouster of Vice President Leni Robredo has submitted their impeachment raps to a lawmaker for endorsement.
Atty. Bruce Rivera, a leading critic of Robredo, said the solon whom he only identified as a male said the latter is still studying the contents.
“I don’t want to preempt anything. Personally, alam kong may [I know there’s a] commitment na,” ABS-CBN quoted him as saying.
Rivera accused Robredo not only of betraying public trust after her video message to the UN deriding the government’s war on drugs but also in misdeclaring her assets and misusing funds belonging to the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council.
“Number one, she misstated several things in her SALN. Number two, there are funds in the HUDCC that were not properly used,” he said.
Rivera added that they will proceed with the filing of the impeachment raps despite President Rodrigo Duterte’s earlier announcement urging otherwise.
“We are not even to the point of wanting to impeach but we just want the world to see that there is a democracy working in the Philippines. Impeachment is a democratic process,” he said.
For his part, Robredo’s legal counsel Barry Gutierrez downplayed the impeachment raps.
“It is something thing that we think is, to be completely blunt, a ridiculous effort on their part,” he said. “We are completely confident that there is utterly no basis on this impeachment complaint that they brought today.”
Duterte himself is the subject of an impeachment complaint filed by Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano; with the latter accusing the former of bribery, graft and corruption, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes.
