Juan Manuel Marquez pokes fun at archrival Manny Pacquiao after announcing his retirement from boxing, celebrating the occasion with a special cake featuring his crowning glory over the Pinoy champ: the knockout win, with Pacquiao lying face down on the canvas.
“Making this decision was difficult and hard for me, but somehow positive. We made (the decision) 15 days ago. I injured my biceps (left), I was training and I felt pretty good, I continued training with only the right hand,” Marquez announced.
“After a month, I started to train, sparring and then I suffered an illness… cold, cough and I cannot be cutting the workouts. That is why this decision is made.”
But things didn’t just get worse recently, for both camps! Since the bout, the two have had lackluster fights against their foes – most probably due to their advanced age. Marquez did sustain numerous injuries throughout his remarkable career, leading to his difficulties in getting a monumental win after his Pacquiao knockout.
Of course, Marquez remembers that moment as one of the best in boxing history – so what best to celebrate his retirement than to remind the world that he’s beaten Pacquiao and sent him to the canvas to finally settle their many years of rivalry, eh?
It can be recalled that their first fight ended in a draw while their next two fights had the Pinoy champ winning. Marquez refused to admit Pacquiao had beaten him; this led to the fourth match which ended in his monumental win.
Talks of a fifth match surfaced after that but Marquez refused, despite the reportedly huge amounts he was offered.
Now that he’s hanging up his gloves for good, the Mexican fighter couldn’t resist but poke fun at his staunch rival.
“I think that’s the unforgettable moment [in my career], not just for me, but for all the fans. How the fights were fought, how the rivalry with Manny Pacquiao was practically knit,” Marquez admitted.
What do you think of knockout cake?
